Design Project 1 - The Endoscopy Unit
An ostomy is an artificial opening in the body that patients use to expel bodily waste from when there are complications in their gastrointestinal tract. There are many types of ostomies; all of which serve different purposes according to the patient. Ostomates must use medical devices called ostomy bags to collect and store the expelled waste until the user can dispose of it. An ileostomy is one in which the ileum is diverted to the stoma due to complications in the large intestine. My client suffered challenges associated with such an operation, affecting his everyday lifestyle. There was ballooning of his ostomy bag which constantly required burping (decoupling of the bag from the skin barrier to release gas build-up) and caused discomfort. In Canada, roughly 70,000 patients undergo an ostomy procedure; many of whom are likely to relate to my client’s issue. The objective of DP-1 was to create a modification of a pre-existing device to fulfill the needs of our assigned clients.
