Design Project 0 - A Wristed Development

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects many worldwide. It is a painful condition in the hand, caused by the compression of the nerve that passes over the carpal bones in the wrist. Symptoms include tingling, numbness, and a burning sensation in the hand. The objective of DP-0 was to design an orthosis to relive pressure from the nerve, relaxing the wrist and fingers and reducing the pain caused by CTS. This syndrome is known to worsen over time without any treatment and continued use of the hand. The designed orthosis had to immobilize the wrist in a neutral position while still allowing the user to perform their daily activities as they normally would. As will be seen in the subsections of this page, the prototype is able to satisfy these conditions and has the ability to reduce pain experienced from CTS.
